Planting Vervain in the garden

This plant is usually grown from seeds. In early autumn, you can also engage in cuttings, but this method is rarely used by gardeners. If you want to sow the seeds immediately to an open place, give preference to the varieties of tough and Buenos Ayres verbena.

This can be done at the end of spring, when the average temperature will be within + 18 ... +20 degrees. Other types of vervaina before planting should be germinated in boxes or pots under a thin layer of soil.

Seeds germinate well in early spring. You can plant vervaina in January or February, but seed germination at this time is much slower, and they bloom simultaneously with plants that were planted in March.

It is recommended to plant vervain in sand or perlite, cleaned with boiling water. Seed growth can be significantly accelerated if the box with them is put in a warm place. When sprouts appear, the box should be moved to a lighter and cooler place.

Until the seeds germinate, it is necessary to cover the container with glass, which will make it possible to create greenhouse conditions in it. Under favorable circumstances, the seeds will emerge within 6-8 days. However, it is likely that you will have to wait about a month for this.

At the beginning of summer, as soon as the warm weather sets in, a plant should be transplanted to a new place. When planting bush varieties of vervains on the site should be left between them a distance of 20 centimeters, between creeping - about 35 centimeters.

Each bush is planted in a separate hole. Before planting in the well, add 500 ml of water and wait a while until part of it goes into the soil. In the slime remaining in the hole, you need to lower the roots of the plant. When you do this, you will only have to pour the earth and press it around the bush.

Despite the fact that the vervain is different stamina, it still needs certain conditions. Plant this plant should be in a sunny, well-lit place. The loose, calcareous soil with good drainage should prevail on the plot.

Growing Verbena

After a few weeks after transplanting the vervain, it should be fed. For dressing it is recommended to use fertilizers containing large amounts of nitrogen.

After this feeding must be entered twice a month. Some varieties of vervain need iron-containing fertilizers.

When the plant blooms, do not overdo nitrogen fertilizers. If this recommendation is ignored, verbena can produce extremely dense foliage, which will affect the quantity and quality of flowers.

Low bush varieties of this plant branch well on their own. Ampel species require pinching the apex above the fifth full sheet.

The optimum temperature for growing vervain is + 16 ... +25 degrees. But even if the temperature has small deviations, it will in no way affect the plant, since it can grow normally even when the air temperature drops to + 5 ... + 10 degrees.

Verbena needs moderate, but regular watering. Although it is a drought-resistant plant, still try to prevent the soil from drying out in the cool season.

In the heat, it is necessary to water vervain more often, but at the same time reduce the dose of watering. Restricting watering in the winter may contribute to flowering plants in the next season (we are talking about verbene grown indoors).

During this period it is necessary to maintain the temperature not lower than +8 degrees. The main conditions for wintering verbena - good lighting and dry air.

A feature of vervain is a long and abundant flowering, the period of which begins in summer and ends only when autumn frosts occur.

On the tops of peduncles dense balls-inflorescences are formed with a lot of small fragrant flowers of the most diverse colors.

Faded inflorescences should be cut to ensure a long flowering period and to preserve the ornamental plant species.
