If your goal is a dog that will only give a voice to approach the house of a stranger and frighten outsiders with a fearsome air, then opt for Newfoundland, St. Bernard or Bernese Mountain Dog. These companion dogs are rather large and very friendly to people, therefore they are unlikely to harm anyone.
The only thing they can do to a stranger stalking to your house is to knock him down. However, hardly anyone of the ill-wishers dares to encroach on your territory when he hears a low barking and sees the size of your guard.
