Ficus - a plant vulnerable to winter

Winter makes its own adjustments to the life of domestic plants, and in the absence of proper care and watering, they may well, if not die, then at least seriously suffer.

Ficus is one of the plants vulnerable to wintering: being a tropical plant, it requires careful and constant attention.

Care for ficus in the winter at home

Lighting

Special attention should be paid to the light.

Use any kind of light source, both artificial (for example, fluorescent, sodium, or other lamps), and natural. The main thing is quantity.

For a standard-sized ficus, a distance of a couple of tens of centimeters from the lamp should be sufficient; about 8-14 hours a day.

It is advisable to turn the plant the other way to the rays of light a couple of times a week: this way you can ensure even distribution of light over the entire leaf surface of the plant.

Important: if you notice that your ficus leaves and leaves turn yellow, this indicates a lack of light, and you need to fix it as soon as possible: put a lamp next to it, move it to the window sill.

For more information about why the ficus yellow, blacken and fall leaves and what to do in this case, you can find here.

Temperature

The optimum temperature for ficus is over sixteen degrees,

it is necessary, firstly, to use only warm water for irrigation, and secondly, to insulate pots with ficus: for this you can simply put a layer of paper (magazine, newspaper, etc.) or special wooden stands for it.

Also, if you have the opportunity, it is advisable to warm the windows in the room in which the ficus is located.

Of course, you need to protect the plants from the wind and move it to another place if you plan to open the windows.

Inspection of foliage

You should regularly inspect the foliage of the plant, because Winter creates in apartments the ideal conditions for the existence of pests and viruses that can destroy your ficus.

Examine the leaves carefully and see if their color has changed and whether small insects have got on them.

Air humidity

It is necessary to take care of the optimum level of moisture content in the air.

Tip: in winter, due to the operation of heating systems, the air is often too dry, so it must be further humidified.

You can use for this purpose both special air humidifiers and any other means: even an ordinary mug of water installed directly on the batteries can improve the situation.

How to water the ficus in the winter?

As noted above, first of all it should be remembered that because of the lowered temperature, the ficus needs more heat, so you should use only warm water for irrigation.

The optimum temperature will be 30-40 degrees: Regular watering with such water will be enough for the soil of your ficus to be warm enough.

Important: In winter, all life processes in a plant are much slower than in other seasons, so do not overdo it and water it only when it is really needed - that is, when the soil at a shallow depth is dry.

Transplantation and reproduction

Winter creates stressful conditions for the plants, so reproduction is better to be postponed closer to spring: then the planted ficus can get strong enough to spend the next winter without any problems. More information about the reproduction of ficuses at home can be found in this material.

The same applies to planting - winter significantly affects the plant, so when it is transplanted in winter there is a considerable likelihood that it will die. More details about home ficus transplantation can be found here.

Tip: the formation of ficus is also not recommended in the winter season.

Thus, home care for a ficus in the winter should be carried out with utmost care and attentiveness: thoughtless watering, inadequate heat, or work on transplanting a plant can significantly worsen its condition.
